Egg in a Basket and K-POP

This, Korean flag themed, egg in a basket recipe was featured in a popular K-pop show Happy together at a “Late Night Cafeteria” corner back in 2012 and it immediately gained its popularity. Essentially, it is a mayo and egg toast in a basket of sliced bread.

Egg in a basket is very easy and fun to make. Probably that is why variations of the toast get featured every now and then on Korean TV programs (e.g. Stars’ Top Recipe at Fun-Staurant).

Making this toast can be a fun family project, particularly when you have young children at home. Cutting the ham or bacon into the style of Korean flag and decorating the bread with them can add some excitement or can be even educational.

My Tips

I made three different variations of toast and my favorite way of eating is including a slice of cheese and parsley and squeezing though lots of mayonnaise. These ingredients really enhance the savory flavor and make the toast even more tastier!

I hope you have fun making this Korean flag themed – egg in a basket recipe.

Egg in a basket cut in half

Ingredients for Egg in a Basket (Serves 1)

  • 2 slices of white bread – You can use other kinds of bread (e.g. multigrain etc.)
  • 1 egg
  • 2 Tbsp mayonnaise (from a squeezable bottle for convenience)
  • 1/2 slice of ham or 1 rindless bacon rasher (small size)
  • A pinch of fine sea salt
  • 1 slice cheese, optional
  • A pinch of parsley, optional

How to Make Egg in a Basket (Korean Flag Themed)

1. Preheat the oven at 180ºC / 356F.

2. Cut the ham/bacon rasher into 4 small square pieces for a simple Korean flag version (per TV program). Alternatively, you could slice the ham/bacon into the real Korean flag stripes.

3. Place one slice of bread on a board. Squeeze and spread mayonnaise with a spread knife thoroughly on one side.

4. Place another slice of bread on a board. Make a round hole on the bread using a round shaped cookie cutter or any round shaped object that’s strong and sharp enough to cut through the bread. (I used 1/2 cup stainless steel measuring cup.)

5. Place the bread slice (with a hole) from step 4 on top of the mayo spread bread slice from step 3. (Optionally, you could insert a slice of cheese in between the bread for a more savory cheesy taste.)

6. Squeeze the mayonnaise around the edge of the top bread slice.

7. Break the egg in the hole and sprinkle a pinch of salt on the egg. (Optionally, you could also add a pinch parsley on the egg.) Place the ham/bacon on the four corners of the bread.

8. Cook the bread in the oven for 20 mins. (If you prefer slightly runnier egg white and yolk, cook it for 15 mins or less.)

Note

The outcome of the toast might vary depending on the size and functionality of your oven, so you might need to adjust the temperature and/or cooking time.
