How to Become a Member at Outback Steak House as a Foreigner

About 3 weeks ago, I went to Outback Steak House with my husband and some foreign friends. When I ordered, I asked for an individual bill for us. We got the bill after the meals and it was amazing how we all were full, yet our (me and my husband) bill was very different to other couples. That is because I was a member and the other foreigners weren’t. (By the way, it doesn’t cost any money to become a member.)

There are 2 main benefits if you are a member of Outback steak House in Korea.

  • You can get a Birthday coupon and with that you can get a free appetizer (with one meal minimum purchase). You can choose one amongst Bloomin’ Onion, Coogee Bay Calamari, and Rangeland rib lets
(You can get this birthday coupon once a year, but you can use it any time you want. They also send you some free coupons occasionally.)
  • If you are married, on your wedding anniversary you can get 2 glasses of free drinks (Pick from Soda, Beer, or Wine)

When I got home I visited the Outback Steak House website to find some information about membership for foreigners. Surprisingly they had an English web page, but it didn’t have any information about membership or any other Event promotions.

I finally found out how to become a member, as a foreigner, at the FAQ on the Korean web page, though I wondered how many foreigners can read that FAQ to become a member. So I am going to tell you how to become a member at Outback Steak House in Korea, so if you want, just do what I say now. (They ask for a lot of information, but that is common for all website registrations in Korea.)

Cheap and Convenient Meals from the Cafeteria

If you live near a university or big corporation, there is a high chance you can get some cheap meals.
In general, eating out in Korea isn’t that expensive, No, actually it is quite cheap since wages are so low in service industries. However meals at most universities and corporations are even cheaper.

I live near a corporation which is one of the biggest steel exporting companies in the world.
Sometimes when I don’t feel like cooking, I just drag my husband there. It’s open to the public as well. Dinner is 2500 won. (Lunch is 3000 won).

This is what I had couple of days ago.

The menu from the top left is: Fish cutlet with tartar sauce, Jeyuk-Bokkeum (Marinated pork with Gochujang sauce), Seasoned Cucumber, White rice, Squid and tofu mixed stew.
It was quite nice, especially for that price. Where else could you get this meal for 2500 won (About 2.60 US dollors)?

-How to buy meals at the cafeteria-

1. There is usually vending machines or a person who sells coupons. So you pay money to get a coupon. There are more choices of menus at universities. (At corporations you can’t choose the menu most of the time.)

2. Follow the crowds. (Not the food rubish emptying line :) )
If you can help yourself, like a buffet system, then you choose what you’re going to get (Kimchi is unavoidable). If you want some more, you can refill freely. (If they let you of course. Where I go it is very common.)

3. Enjoy the meal.

4. Make sure you empty your food scraps at the end in the bins provided (or put the tray in the place provided) – just follow everyone else.

What Brown Rice Packages look like

I noticed some foreigners buy brown rice when they visit Seoul (Itaewon). Which means they don’t think it’s available at the local market. So I am going to show you what it looks like (just one brand) and teach you the Korean name for brown rice.

This is the brown rice I usually get at Homeplus. It’s a 4kg bag and costs about 11,000 won. brown rice
They also do have a smaller pack(1kg bag or less as well) for about 2800 won.

“Hyun mi” is the Korean name for brown rice, so if you can’t find where it is at the super market, you can ask for it from now on. However there is also Glutinous brown rice which is “Hyun mi chap ssal” in Korean, so don’t pick that up if you want normal brown rice.

When you cook the brown rice, it is best to use a pressure cooker, if you don’t have one make sure you soak the rice before you steam or boil it.

Free pizza from Pizza Hut

I like planning for meals before hand. Or it might be a Korean thing. (According to my husband)
From last night I tried hard to think of what to have for lunch today. One thing was clear. We needed to go grocery shopping. But I didn’t want to go shopping early morning for that.

When I got up in the morning, I still hadn’t decided what we were going to have for lunch. I tried hard to think of something, then I decided to have pizza for lunch.

Pizza Hut pizza in Korea is quite expensive compare to other countries. So we don’t eat it very often. However I’ve been collecting some coupons from Pizza Hut since November last year, so I had 12 coupons in my hand. Which means I can order pan or thin medium pizza (for 2 people) for free. -It is not a discount coupon.

This is what the coupon looks like.

You can get this coupon whenever you order home delivery pizza, it is in the right edge of the box lid. So if you didn’t realized about this, don’t forget to cut it out from next time.

It says

- Box coupon-

If you collect this coupon, we will exchange it as follow.

  • 10 coupons – One pan or thin pizza (for 2 people size – medium)
  • 15 coupons – One cheese crust or bistro pizza (for 2 people size – medium) or One pan or thin or potato pizza (for 3-4 people size – large)
  • 20 coupons – One cheese crust pizza or pan or thin pizza (for 4-5 people size – family size) or One rich gold pizza (for 2 people size – medium) or One bistro pizza (for 3-4 people size – large) or One big 4 pizza (large square)
  • 25 coupon – One rich gold pizza (for 4-5 people size – family)

Coupon expire date : valid to xxxx.xx.xx
Order number : Tel) 1588-5588

So we ordered pizza, and it got delivered. (Of course there is no delivery fee.)

One thing you need to remember is, there is no coupon in the free pizza box.
So don’t get your hopes up too high.

We found that we can order any types of pizza even with free coupons, so we ordered the most expensive pizza (for 2 people) “Extrema” – 14,900 won (US $15.70)

This is a picture of the thin Extrema pizza.

However super supreme pizza which we usually get is 13,900 won (US $14.65). Anyway it was really yummy.

This is the “Rice Cooker”

This is my rice cooker. I bought it about 6 months ago.rice cooker
Whenever I travel overseas and still need to cook myself, I really miss having this rice cooker. Because I don’t need to worry about spilling water when rice boils, it never burns or sticks in the pot, and it always gives me perfect textured rice.

It’s a pressure cooker and it seems to make the rice sticker and shinier than just a normal electric rice cooker. It has different menu settings for white rice only, brown or grain mixed rice, and sushi/Kimbap rice. It can also cook sponge cake and steamed stew or meat etc (but I haven’t tried sponge cake with it yet).

It is absolutely my gem among other kitchenware and very convenient to use. The only problem I am having is that it is a bit hard to clean the hole where the steam comes out.

I usually cook a mix of brown and white rice – 1:1 (for 2 people), it takes about 25-30 minutes. However if I cook only white rice (for 2 people) it takes only 15 minutes.

Lastly, if you can’t use up the rice for one meal then just leave it in the rice cooker. Because it can be stored in the rice cooker for days and days. However it is best not to store the rice for more than 24 hours, because it’s not as yummy as it could be and the rice starts to dry out. It also may smell and change color but there is no harm.

If you are interested in buying the same brand (cuckoo) rice cooker as I have, you can try Hmart online shop. Or if you are interested in buying a Japanese maker like zojirushi you can try amazon
