What Kind of Camera Do I Use?

Many people have been asking me what kind of camera I use here and there on this blog. I want to take this as a compliment that my photos are good, so you want to use the same camera. (Or did you mean that they are awful, so you want to avoid using the same camera? :) )

Instead of answering lots of individual questions about my camera, I decided to give one full answer to this matter.

Currently, I am using a Canon Digital Rebel XTi 10.1MP (Canon EOS 400D or Canon Kiss digital X in some other countries) with a Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM lens.

And here are some collages of pictures I personally think are my best, using my equipment. You will see how the camera (with the right lens) and natural light makes a difference.

(under natural light)

For the record, I started using the Canon Digital Rebel XTi 10.1MP for this blog from this post (ddeokbokki recipe). Before that I used a Canon PowerShot S45 . It turned out OK sometimes, but I did a lot of work to get more light with an extra lamp.

Some good photos from the Canon PowerShot S45

Using an SLR camera with my lens is definitely my life saver. It reduces the hassles of getting light and saves time. I also get better and more satisfying results.

Impressive. All pics (especially the ones using natural light) looks like straight from the pages of a food magazine. You do have a flair for art direction. :)

Brilliant photos! Now we know the camera which took the pics :)

Excellent choice for your dSLR! I have the same camera, so I guess smart minds think alike! ;) I bought mine from the Namdaemun camera shops, I have the Kiss Digital X (Japanese model name) and I got the 50mm f1.8 and a Tamron 17-50 f2.8 to start off. I’m loving this camera. My uncle has the 50mm f1.4…it’s a wonderful lens!

I hope to get a new camera this year, but other items seem to be more of a priority…we’ll see, I’m still hopeful :)

    Faith and pablopabla,
    Thank you.
It’s a combination of a good camera, lens, light, and beginner’s luck. :)

    Gdog,
I guess you are right about that. ;) Thanks for the good laugh.
I have an 18-55mm standard lens and a 50 mm 1.4 to start off with.
But I want more lenses, you might feel the same way. Gee, having photography as a hobby is quite costly, isn’t it? I have been hinting here and there to my husband that I want to get more lenses this Christmas. :)

    Kat,
Having hope is good. I hope you can get what you want. I waited for nearly 2 years to get my camera. The blog was a good excuse for me.

    Sue,
Your pictures are always lovely and make me hungry.

I just bought a digital rebel XT (bought behind the curve because it’s cheaper). I am quite pleased with the results as I can tell that now my pictures look more professional, but I have yet to buy a macro lense. The lense you bought is the expensive one, I am probably just going to get the 50mm f1.8.

Hi Sue: I have never used a f/1.8 lens before. No wonder your bokeh is so nice! Enjoyed your pics — real nice!

    Hi Marian,

    I am not a professional either. :)
But I would choose among these cameras if I didn’t want to spend as much as an SLR costs.

    Canon PowerShot SD800 IS

    Canon PowerShot G7

    Canon PowerShot SD900 Ti

    Hi Marian,
I don’t have much experience with other brands but Cannon.
Cannon and Nikons are known as two of the best camera makers, but I am not sure about other brands.

Your pictures are beautiful! And you can totally see the difference with the two cameras. I wanted to get a SLR camera, but I’m too chicken to transition.. did you take classes or learn on the fly?

I am so glad you mentioned the lense you used. I just got a Canon XT with a cheap beginner lense that came with the package, and have been thinking about getting a 50mm f/1.4 USM after all the good reviews I read about. Now, after seeing your pictures I am even more convinced this would be my next lense.
